We come across numerous substances in the form of a white powder on a daily basis. Most of the time we can identify the powder by tasting it or smelling it, and it quickly becomes clear that it is either powdered sugar or a laundry detergent. But what if the white powder is toxic?
The focal point of this workshop is analytical work in the chemistry lab. The specific characteristics of an unknown white powder are determined by comparing such chemical properties as water solubility, thermal behaviour and conductivity, as well as colour changes based on the pH-value. In the end, the unknown substance is precisely identified using the flame coloration test.
