Momentum Machine
Pirouette – an elegant trick.
Sometimes fast, sometimes slow, and then breathtakingly fast again – and all these variations in a fluid movement. How do pirouette queens and skaters manage to do this? Behind it all: pure physics!
The farther the mass is from the axis of rotation, the more resistance it creates against the rotation. This means that with the arm and leg extended, the movement slows down without any braking. When the hand returns to the grip and the foot is brought closer to the axis, the rotational movement speeds up again.
