Hot - Cold
Can something be hot and cold at the same time?
The copper coil is warm on one side and cold on the other. Our temperature receptors detect this immediately and unmistakably.
In the middle section of this coil, warm and cold windings alternate in close proximity. This is unfamiliar to us. We have no sensory experience for it. This creates a perceptual conflict that leads to a surprising reaction.
