Moving Gray Areas
Remaining still while moving, turning, shrinking, growing.
They move, these gray figures – yet they stay in the same place.
Gray figures, thinly outlined in black and white: when the background brightness changes, they begin to move. The background is never darker than the black outlines, nor brighter than the white ones. At a medium setting, its brightness matches that of the gray figures. We do not perceive brightness values absolutely, but always in comparison to the surroundings. Bright objects appear larger against a dark background, while dark ones vanish.
