Edges communicate Information
Dot, white, somewhat mysterious.
Two gray panels, each with a cross. To the right, a white area:
In one case, the area is sharply defined against the gray background. Looking at the cross, nothing special happens around the area.
In the other case, the background is gradually shaded, forming a blurry dot. Looking at the cross on this panel, the blurry dot slowly disappears!
The soft, blurry edge stops sending new signals to the brain after a while. Our visual system then fills the white area with the background color.
