The Tea Leaves Experiment / Tea Cup Experiment
«Everyday Physics»
Experiment like Albert Einstein. In a paper about river meander formation, he wrote: «I begin with a small experiment that anyone can repeat themselves. If you set a liquid (in a teacup) in motion with a spoon, the tea leaves soon gather at the center of the bottom of the cup…»
Here, we play with colored aluminum flakes in a water tank, spin the cylinder, and then stop it. How do the «tea leaves» behave? Their paths resemble those of tree leaves in a river bend.
